What predicts AE performance, in our experience working with sales orgs, comes down to four behaviors that show up inside a structured screen:

Discovery instinct. When the AI (or recruiter) asks an open-ended question, does the candidate ask a clarifying question back? Or do they immediately start answering? Top AEs cannot help themselves — they probe. Median AEs deliver the rehearsed answer.

Deal-loss honesty. "Tell me about a deal you lost in the last six months" is a famous interview question because it works. The candidates who say "the prospect ghosted us" are different from the candidates who say "I disqualified too late and the SE wasted three demos." A real screen captures which side of that line a candidate falls on.

Pipeline math literacy. Can the candidate think in funnel terms? "If your conversion from demo to close is 22% and you need to close two deals this month, how many demos do you need to run?" is a question median AEs cannot answer cleanly. The strong ones can do it in their head.

Written restatement. Have the candidate restate the value proposition of their last company in two sentences, no jargon. The candidates who can do this are usually the ones who can write a discovery recap email that closes a deal.

What to Pressure-Test Vendors On

  3. Show me a probing follow-up in a live demo. When the candidate gives a vague answer, does the AI ask "what was the unlock there?" or does it move to the next scripted question?

  4. Show me your bias methodology. Not your bias audit cert. Walk me through how the scoring model treats demographic signal during the conversation. Vendors who hand you an annual cert and pivot are vendors whose bias methodology is unpublished.

How to Run a Sales-Focused Pilot

If you are seriously evaluating two or three platforms, do not run a generic 30-day pilot. Run this comparison instead.

Calibration round (week 1-2). Have two of your top-quartile AEs and two of your bottom-quartile AEs each take the AI interview as a candidate would.
