TestGorilla Assessment: What to Expect and How to Prepare (2026)

Introduction

An employer has invited you to complete a TestGorilla assessment, and you want to know what is coming before you click the link. This guide walks through what the platform tests, how it is scored, and where candidates tend to get caught off guard.

Quick answer: A TestGorilla assessment is an employer-built skills screen delivered by email link. It can bundle up to five tests plus up to 20 custom questions, each individually timed. You are scored mostly by percentile against other candidates, and you get one attempt per email address.

What a TestGorilla assessment actually is

TestGorilla is an Amsterdam-based pre-employment skills-assessment platform. An employer builds the assessment, then invites you by email. You do not need a candidate account to take it, and TestGorilla is not a personal testing service — you cannot sign up on your own to practice the real tests beforehand.

Assessments are available in 12 candidate languages including English, Spanish, Dutch, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Polish. You take it only in the language the employer chose, not one you pick yourself.

How the tests are built

Per TestGorilla's own documentation, an assessment can consist of up to five tests and up to 20 custom questions, depending on the employer's plan. The skills library spans several test types:

  • Cognitive aptitude — math and numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and reading comprehension, and logical (inductive and deductive) reasoning
  • Attention to detail
  • Situational judgment
  • Language proficiency and communication
  • Personality and culture (for example 16-types or Enneagram-style questionnaires)
  • Job-specific and role-knowledge tests
  • Coding tests

An employer can use as few as one test or the full set of five. The custom questions are the employer's own additions on top of the library tests. If you want the broader context on where these fit in a hiring funnel, see our skills assessments topic hub.

The candidate experience, step by step

  1. The invite. You receive an email link. It is single-use and expires once you complete the assessment, so plan to finish in one sitting.
  2. The honesty agreement. Before starting, you sign TestGorilla's honesty agreement, which asks you not to use AI tools and not to attempt multiple retakes.
  3. Timed tests. Each test is timed. TestGorilla's guidance to employers sets a minimum of 30 seconds per question, 45 to 60 seconds as a normal length, and up to 90 seconds for longer questions — so roughly a minute per question is typical. Total time varies by employer.
  4. Navigation. You cannot go back to a previous question. Skipping is warned and permanent. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so guessing beats leaving a question blank.
  5. Breaks. You can take breaks between tests, but not between questions.

Two mechanics catch candidates out. First, the timer keeps running even if you close the window or lose internet — only answers you already submitted are saved when time expires. Second, an employer can add qualifying questions where a disqualifying answer ends the assessment early, which is why some candidates report being cut off "after only a few questions."

Mobile is possible but not recommended because of the small screen, and TestGorilla specifically discourages mobile for coding tests. Use a laptop or desktop.

How TestGorilla watches for cheating

TestGorilla applies a set of anti-cheating measures during monitored assessments:

  • Webcam snapshots roughly every 30 seconds for identity
  • Full-screen exit tracking and browser tab-switch detection
  • Webcam on or off status
  • Developer-tools open detection
  • IP-based location
  • Paste detection

Results are grouped into behavior tiers — No Issues, Some Issues, or Major Issues. TestGorilla explicitly states it does not label candidates as cheaters. To keep the tests fresh, personal and educational email sign-ups are blocked so you cannot self-serve the real tests, and questions and correct answers are hidden even from TestGorilla staff.

On accommodations, at the start of an assessment you can request adjustments for conditions such as dyslexia, ADD, or ADHD. The request is private, and disclosing it to the employer is optional. Non-fluent speakers of the assessment language automatically receive 20 percent extra time.

How scoring works

Percentile scoring is the default. Your results page shows your percentile alongside your raw percent-correct score, plotted on a bell curve against others who took the same assessment. PDF reports show both numbers.

A percentile reflects your ranking against a reference group — a 54th percentile means you did better than 54 percent of candidates. Because percentile scoring factors in question difficulty, scores stay comparable across different assessments, unlike raw percent correct on its own.

Each test draws from a bank of hundreds of questions that are algorithmically cycled, so you are unlikely to see the same questions twice, even across different employers. Questions retire after a maximum exposure count. You can optionally set up a Candidate Profile to view your own results and track applications.

Prep tips that actually help

  • Set aside uninterrupted time. The single-use link and running timer reward finishing in one clean session on a stable connection.
  • Use a laptop or desktop, especially if the role is technical and coding tests are likely.
  • Answer every question. No going back and no penalty for wrong answers means guessing is better than skipping.
  • Watch the clock per question. At roughly a minute each, do not sink several minutes into one item.
  • Read carefully on cognitive tests. Candidates describe some deployments as time-pressured, with quick math, chart reading, and near-identical answer options that reward careful parsing.
  • Request accommodations at the start if you qualify, and flag if you are a non-fluent speaker of the assessment language to get the automatic extra time.

On the retake question, be clear-eyed. You get one attempt per email address, and multiple-attempt prevention blocks re-registration. Any retake is solely at the employer's discretion — TestGorilla states it has no authority to grant one.

FAQ

how long is the TestGorilla assessment

It varies by employer, but expect roughly one minute per question. Each test is individually timed, with TestGorilla suggesting 30 to 90 seconds per question, and an assessment can hold up to five tests plus up to 20 custom questions.

can you retake a TestGorilla test

Usually no. You get one attempt per email address, and the invite link is single-use. Only the employer can decide to allow a retake — TestGorilla says it has no authority to grant one itself.

can you practice TestGorilla tests beforehand

No. TestGorilla is not a personal testing service and blocks personal and educational email sign-ups, so you cannot access the real tests to practice. You can only prepare by knowing the format and test types in advance.

does TestGorilla use a webcam and watch for cheating

Yes, on monitored assessments. It takes webcam snapshots roughly every 30 seconds and tracks tab switching, full-screen exits, developer tools, IP location, and pasting, then sorts results into behavior tiers rather than labeling anyone a cheater.

what happens if my internet disconnects during a TestGorilla test

The timer keeps running. Only answers you already submitted are saved when time expires, so a disconnect can cost you unanswered questions. Take the test on the most stable connection you can.

is guessing penalized on TestGorilla

No. There is no penalty for wrong answers, and you cannot return to skipped questions, so answering every question is better than leaving any blank.
