Modern Hire Interview: What Candidates Should Expect (2026)

Introduction

You opened an email inviting you to a Modern Hire interview, clicked a link, and now you are wondering what you actually signed up for. You are not sitting across from a person. You are recording yourself and answering questions on a screen.

This guide walks through what the experience involves, based on how the platform describes itself and what past candidates report. One thing to know up front — Modern Hire was acquired by HireVue in May 2023, so your emails, portal, and support pages may carry either the Modern Hire or the HireVue brand.

A Modern Hire interview is usually a one-way, on-demand video interview paired with a role-based assessment. Through a unique link, you record answers to five to eight pre-set questions with no live interviewer, and may also complete simulations or scales. Most take under 20 to 30 minutes and feed a first-step screen a recruiter later reviews.

Part 1: the on-demand video interview

The core of Modern Hire is an asynchronous — or one-way — video interview. There is no interviewer on the other end. You receive an email with a unique link, and you record your answers to questions that are set in advance. Some questions appear as short videos, others as plain text.

Here is the typical rhythm per question:

  • A prep or think timer, usually around 30 seconds, which you can often skip if you are ready.
  • A record timer, usually around 120 seconds (2 minutes), to give your answer on camera.
  • Some items are not video at all — they can be simple multiple-choice or written, such as confirming you hold a valid driver's license.

Most video-based assessments include between five and eight questions. Expect a mix of:

  • Motivation and behavioral questions about why you want the role and how you have acted in the past.
  • Situational judgement questions that ask what you would do in a given scenario.
  • Scenario-based simulations where you act out a response on camera — for example, replying to an angry customer.

What is the platform looking at? Per the vendor, the assessment studies your video interview to highlight job-related competencies like communication and problem-solving, along with soft skills such as adaptability, conscientiousness, drive for results, and initiative.

Two points that ease a common worry. The vendor states it never uses your video recording to identify you, so there is no facial recognition for identity. And it describes the interview as a first-step screen that replaces the roughly 20-minute recruiter phone call — top candidates move on to person-to-person interviews, and the vendor says hiring decisions are made by people.

Part 2: the assessment portion

Modern Hire's history is assessment-first. Alongside the video interview, many candidates get a role-based assessment — historically branded the Virtual Job Tryout — which can include job simulations and rating scales rather than just spoken answers.

In practice this means part of your session may not involve talking to a camera at all. You might read a scenario and pick a response, rate statements about how you work, or step through a simulated version of the job.

One accessibility note worth flagging from past candidate reports. A blind candidate invited to a Modern Hire job tryout for a remote customer-service role found the video-with-captions job previews were fine, but the multiple-choice questions could not be read with the JAWS screen reader and required an accommodation request. Another user described the same tool as very inaccessible with JAWS. If you use assistive technology, request an accommodation from the hiring company before you start.

A realistic word on what comes after. Candidates commonly report a long silence after submitting. Typical response times run about 2 to 4 weeks, stretching to 4 to 6 weeks for high-volume entry-level or graduate roles, and closer to 1 to 2 weeks for high-priority engineering roles. Silence is normal — it usually means recruiters are batch-reviewing, not that you have been rejected.

Retakes, practice, and tech setup

Practice. Practice questions exist, but only for OnDemand interviews you record on your own time — not for scheduled or live ones. If you have an OnDemand invite, use the practice run to get comfortable with the timers.

Retakes. Retakes are not automatic. If something goes wrong, you have to request a retake or reset, handled through the HireVue candidate help center or the hiring company. Do not assume you can simply redo it.

Tech setup. The vendor's stated requirements:

  • Browser-based — works on a computer, tablet, or phone.
  • A recommended internet speed of at least 350 Kbps (0.35 Mbps) for both download and upload.
  • Keep your device charged or plugged in.
  • You can test your microphone before you begin.
  • If your connection drops, you can resume from the same link where you left off.

A few pieces of general interview advice that apply to any recorded interview, framed as general advice and not vendor rules — find a quiet, well-lit room, position the camera at eye level, and structure behavioral answers with the STAR method (situation, task, action, result) so your two minutes stay focused.

One candidate testimonial surfaced by the vendor called it easy and convenient. One developer's account was the opposite — recording answers into a countdown timer with no feedback and no way to clarify, which he described as staring into a void. Both reactions are real. Knowing the format ahead of time is what closes the gap between them.

FAQ

What is a Modern Hire interview?

It is usually a one-way, on-demand video interview combined with a role-based assessment. You record answers to five to eight pre-set questions through a unique link, with no live interviewer, and may also complete simulations or rating scales.

Is the Modern Hire assessment hard?

It is less about right answers and more about clear, structured responses under a timer. The video questions cover motivation, past behavior, and situational judgement, and the assessment portion may add simulations or scales — none of it requires special preparation beyond thinking through common examples in advance.

Can you retake the Modern Hire interview?

Not automatically. You have to request a retake or reset through the HireVue candidate help center or the hiring company, so if a question goes badly, do not assume you can redo it on your own.

How long does a Modern Hire interview take?

Most video-based assessments take under 20 to 30 minutes, but set aside about 45 minutes to be safe. Expect roughly 30 seconds of prep and up to 2 minutes to record per video question.

Does Modern Hire use facial recognition?

The vendor states it never uses your video recording to identify you, so it does not use facial recognition for identity. It also says the interview is a first-step screen and that hiring decisions are made by people.

How long until I hear back after a Modern Hire interview?

Often 2 to 4 weeks, and longer for high-volume roles. A long silence usually means recruiters are batch-reviewing rather than that you have been rejected.
