Braintrust Screening and the AIR Interview: What Candidates Can Expect

Introduction

Braintrust is a talent network, not a classic assessment vendor like HeyMilo or Maki. You do not sit a skills test the moment you sign up. But joining and applying still involves real screening steps — profile completion, identity verification, an approval review, and, increasingly, an AI video interview called Braintrust AIR. If you are applying, here is what actually happens.

Quick Answer: To work through Braintrust, you build a profile, verify your identity, and apply to matching roles. Approval as "Approved Talent" depends on your resume, skills, communication, and experience. Many roles now route candidates through the Braintrust AIR interview — an on-demand AI video interview, usually 15 to 20 minutes, that scores your answers against recruiter criteria before a human decides.

How getting vetted on Braintrust works

Braintrust's own documentation describes the path as complete your profile, apply to a matching role, and then — as part of the review — you may be prompted to complete Identity Verification and a screening interview. Only "Approved Talent" can message matchers and employers directly.

Identity Verification (IDV) is a required quick step. Braintrust tells candidates to "Get Verified" so applications become visible to clients.

To reach Approved Talent status, Braintrust lists the criteria it looks for:

  • A detailed resume
  • Technical skills that match current client needs
  • Strong communication skills
  • 3+ years of professional experience
  • Ability to start right away
  • Ability to work as W-2, 1099, or C2C

If you are not approved, Braintrust says you can re-apply after 6 months.

The AIR interview itself

Braintrust AIR stands for "AI Recruiter." Per Braintrust's candidate documentation, it is an on-demand video interview you can complete immediately after applying, without waiting for a live recruiter to schedule a call.

A few practical details from the vendor's docs:

  • Length: Braintrust says most AIR interviews take 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Questions: Braintrust recommends recruiters use roughly 5 to 8 questions total, mixing open-ended prompts with confirmations.
  • One chance per question: The format typically gives you one attempt per question, like a live interview.
  • Disconnects: You can resume if you get disconnected.
  • No download, no login: You reach it through an emailed or texted link — no app to install and no account to create.

What AIR actually scores

This is the part most candidates want clarity on, and Braintrust is specific about it.

According to Braintrust's documentation, AIR analyzes your words through speech-to-text transcription only. Braintrust states it does not score appearance, voice, tone, or background.

Your transcribed answers are graded against recruiter-defined, job-specific criteria to produce a structured scorecard. Braintrust's best-practice docs note a limit of 5 scoring criteria per interview, no built-in weighting (a criterion is repeated if a recruiter wants it to count more), and scoring on a 1-to-5 scale against an explicit rubric.

Braintrust also says all decisions are made by human reviewers. The AIR scorecard is one input — recruiters and hiring managers make the final call.

Retakes and edge cases

Retakes are recruiter-configurable, per Braintrust's retake-limit documentation. A recruiter can set no retake, a limit of 1, 2, or 3, or unlimited attempts.

Two rules are worth knowing:

  • Only completed interviews count against your limit.
  • Incomplete attempts under 2 minutes do not count.

Braintrust notes that once you hit the configured limit, you are blocked from re-taking with the same email address.

What candidates report

Independent accounts are thinner than the official docs, so treat the following as context rather than a guaranteed experience.

An independent candidate blog account from January 2023 (before AIR was the default path) described the join flow as profile setup, a screening round with an already-approved community member, and a "Braintrust Validation Process." That writer reported a job-specific take-home coding test, calls with hiring managers and a CEO, and an offer that fell through for external reasons. That older community-screening route predates AIR and reflects how the process worked in early 2023.

More recent, self-reported LinkedIn posts describe AIR interviews taking around 30 minutes — longer than Braintrust's stated 15 to 20 — and several non-native English speakers report their accents were handled well. These are self-reported and could not be independently verified.

For model context, a third-party marketplace review (SideHusl, updated June 2026) describes Braintrust as a tech-talent marketplace where a 10% fee is paid by the client, not the freelancer, and freelancers set their own rate.

FAQ

How hard is it to get approved on Braintrust?

Approval depends on meeting Braintrust's stated bar, not on beating a curve. Braintrust lists a detailed resume, matching technical skills, strong communication, 3+ years of experience, immediate availability, and willingness to work W-2, 1099, or C2C.
