Alva Labs Assessment: What to Expect on the Logic and Personality Tests

Introduction

If an employer has invited you to complete an Alva Labs assessment, you will usually take two short adaptive tests. Alva is a Stockholm-based assessment platform, and its tests are designed to be reusable across employers. Here is what to expect and how the scoring works.

Quick answer: The Alva Labs assessment is built around two adaptive tests — a logic (general mental ability) test of 20 tasks and a Five-Factor personality test. Each takes roughly 12 to 15 minutes. Results are generated instantly, you see the same report the recruiter sees, and you can reuse them with other employers for 24 months.

The two tests

Alva's core is a suite of proprietary psychometric assessments. For most candidate invitations, two are in play:

  • Logic Ability Test — an adaptive general mental ability test of 20 tasks. No math, language, or prior knowledge is required.
  • Personality Test — an adaptive questionnaire built on the Five-Factor Model, covering Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Emotional Stability, rated in a work context.

Both are often administered together, according to prep providers. You can take them on mobile, tablet, or laptop, and you can pause and resume where you left off.

The personality test uses statements you rate on a 1 to 5 scale, from strongly disagree to strongly agree. The number of questions varies with how consistent your answers are, and it usually runs about 15 minutes. You choose the test language before you start, and you cannot change it mid-test without contacting support.

The logic test up close

The logic test is where most candidates focus their attention, and it has a specific structure worth knowing in advance:

  • 20 tasks, each with a 2-minute time limit. Most people finish in 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Each task is a 3 by 3 matrix of figures with one empty square marked with a question mark, and six answer options, exactly one correct.
  • Patterns run left to right across rows and top to bottom down columns — never diagonally.
  • You cannot skip a task and return to it. You must answer when it is presented.
  • Before the real test you get 2 practice tasks that do not affect your score.

Because it is adaptive, the test adjusts difficulty as you go. For more context on where tests like this fit in hiring, see our skills and assessments hub.

Scoring and the 24-month reuse window

Your logic score is not simply the number of questions you got right. Alva uses a Bayesian, Item Response Theory model on a single calibrated scale with no norm groups. The score reflects the most likely level of your logical ability given your answers, so the difficulty and importance of the items you solve drive the estimate — Alva gives an example of a 9 on a roughly 1 to 10 scale.

Results are instant. The report is generated as soon as you finish, you can download it, and you see the same report the recruiter sees. What you cannot see is the role fit — how your score compares against the target profile for the job.

The reuse window is a defining feature:

  • Results can be shared with another company within 24 months of completion, using the same email address, and only if not already shared with that company.
  • Only your most recently completed tests can be shared. You cannot pick older results.
  • If you have already shared results once, they auto-share on re-application within 24 months, and you cannot self-retake for that company.
  • Results older than 24 months cannot be reused.

Fair Play rules

The logic test runs background proctoring that monitors browser activity. It detects behaviors such as leaving the test environment through tab or window changes, using other tools or apps at the same time, and taking screenshots. On initial violations you get an on-screen warning, and repeated violations past a threshold flag the result. You can add a short explanation before submitting, and recruiters see the flag, logs, timestamps, and your note. This is browser-behavior monitoring — there is no mention of webcam recording.

Alva's Fair Play Policy is clear about what counts as a violation and what does not:

  • Not allowed: attempting to manipulate the tests or results, and using AI or large language models to answer.
  • Allowed: practising on similar tests beforehand, reading about the assessments, and taking a break within the rules.

Retakes are controlled by the hiring company. Alva support cannot reset tests, so any retake within the 24-month window has to be authorised by the employer directly.

Candidate impressions

Independent test-prep guides describe the Alva logic test as "considered one of the hardest logic tests out there," because it is adaptive and gets progressively harder as you answer correctly.

Prep providers also report that the logic and personality tests are often administered together and that many candidates prepare in advance — paid prep courses and free practice simulations both exist. Public LinkedIn testimonials describe the logic test as having a "challenging adaptive structure" and share percentile-style feedback, which indicates candidates receive detailed personal reports. A dedicated candidate forum thread did not surface in research, so this picture leans on prep-site reviews and LinkedIn posts.

How to prepare

  • Use the built-in practice. The logic test includes 2 non-scored practice tasks before the real one — treat them seriously to settle into the format.
  • Get comfortable with 3 by 3 matrices. Practising abstract pattern puzzles is explicitly allowed under Fair Play, and third-party simulations are widely available.
  • Plan for 2 minutes per task and no going back. Answer decisively, because you cannot return to a task later.
  • Answer the personality test honestly and consistently. It is rated in a work context, and its adaptivity keys off consistent responses.
  • Do not use AI tools. They are banned under the Fair Play Policy, and proctoring flags unusual behavior.

FAQ

How long is the Alva Labs test?

Each test takes about 12 to 15 minutes, and most people finish the logic test in 15 to 20 minutes. Taken together, expect roughly half an hour.

Is the Alva Labs logic test hard?

Independent prep guides call it one of the hardest logic tests out there. It is adaptive, so it gets progressively harder as you answer correctly, and each of the 20 tasks has a 2-minute limit.

Can you retake the Alva Labs test?

Not on your own. Alva support cannot reset tests, so a retake within the 24-month window must be authorised by the hiring company directly.

Can you go back to a previous question on the Alva logic test?

No. You cannot skip a task and return to it — you must answer each task when it is presented before moving on.

Can I reuse my Alva results for another job?

Yes, within 24 months of completion, using the same email address, as long as you have not already shared them with that company. Only your most recent results can be shared.

Is using ChatGPT or AI allowed on the Alva test?

No. Using AI or large language models to answer is a Fair Play violation. Practising on similar tests beforehand is allowed.
